Streat
300,000 people. This is the number of homeless people in France according to the Fondation Abbé Pierre. The number is constantly increasing and malnutrition is a daily threat for this already fragile category of people. They have limited access to kitchen utensils, which greatly reduces their ability to prepare nutritious meals.
Faced with this urgent situation, Déborah designed Streat in collaboration with engineers, designers and experts in the social field. This fully equipped public kitchen is activated by a card or an NFC cell phone sensor provided by local associations. It is a place to prepare good food and to sit down to eat in comfort and safety.
This project was selected as part of Design L'Expo 2021 and was exhibited at La Cale 2 Créateurs from 4 December 2021 to 27 February 2022.
"
The idea may seem incongruous today, but it already announces a potential new urbanity for tomorrow.
"
"Feeding the homeless is a sensitive and complex issue. Deborah began her project by drawing portraits of the people she approached. This silent activity, which is a talent of the designer, requires strong concentration and honors the model. The latter is observed with care in a context that leaves room for listening and dialogue.
Touched by the testimonies entrusted to her and driven by the desire to design a fair project, Deborah went beyond her training as a graphic designer. She used all the resources of the designer’s profession and formalized spaces on a scale of 1. First in cardboard, then in paper, she modeled the smallest details of uses which seemed to fulfil the wishes that she had heard: to rediscover a decent diet by preparing a meal in complete freedom.
Leaving behind any preconceived or pessimistic ideas about space and common goods, Deborah ultimately designed a public kitchen. The idea may seem incongruous today, but it already announces a potential new urbanity for tomorrow." Julia Kunkel - Director of Food Design Lab
