Impacts #6: Coralie Sabin, Alumni 2013

Coralie Sabin is a young designer in the Silicon Valley, graduate from the school in 2013.

After graduating from L’École de design in 2013, Coralie headed for the United States. She joined Zozi in San Francisco in 2014, then Pinterest in 2015.

With user tests, functionalities, photos and digital strategy, here is the profile of a young designer at the heart of one of the biggest social networks in the Silicon Valley.

“The first user tests are the most exciting phase of the project”

In just under a week, the new feature on Pinterest “Shop the look” had already been used by nearly 8.8 million users. This project led by Coralie Sabin, a product designer in the company for two years, and her team, represents a big step for Pinterest, the catalog of ideas. From now on, internet users can buy clothes and accessories directly on-line. Wherever you see the blue dots, you can now buy the identical article or something similar to the look.

After choosing the artwork and animation and constructing the data stream, the first user tests are the most exciting phase of the project,” underlines Coralie who has lived in San Francisco for the past four years. “It’s during this phase that we really test the functionality and confirm our intuitions.

“What matters more than anything else is relationships with others”

It took around six months to develop the project. “It’s the result of a lot of close teamwork, our team is really close-knit,” insists Coralie. “We discuss our projects at great length in-house with the engineers but also with the other designers - the aim is to design optimal functionality while taking into account all the technical constraints. Pinterest is first and foremost a network for sharing leisure activities (cooking, fashion, decoration, etc.) but we want to encourage users to bring these tools for discovering new ideas into reality because what matters more than anything else is relationships with others. It’s a visual discovery tool for every imaginable passion and interest (what to make for dinner tonight, how to do woodwork or plan a trip) but we encourage users to actually try out these ideas in real life, because what matters more than anything else is relationships with others”.

“The digital economy recruits a lot of professionals from abroad”

In this profession, you need a perfect command of software tools but you also have to be extremely flexible and very well organized, ” remarks Coralie who was hired almost immediately after graduating. “In San Francisco, the digital economy recruits a lot of professionals from abroad,” observes the young French designer “as the company considers the diversity of backgrounds, know-how and approaches to be a real asset.”

One day she may return to Europe, but for now this designer passionate about sewing, knitting and embroidery is enjoying “this golden interlude” in the heart of the Silicon Valley, in a city “where the sense of freedom is conducive to creativity”.
