A workshop in design fiction and AI to imagine the future of healthcare
At the end of 2025, the international Master's students of Le Studio France in Nantes spent five intense days exploring the future of healthcare! As part of a workshop combining design fiction and artificial intelligence organized in partnership with Nantes University Hospital and the advertising agency Heral, they explored themes related to future challenges in the sector.
A workshop with AI and design fiction
During this workshop, they learned how to use AI tools to create, in intercultural teams, a complete 20-minute narrative video projecting a desirable future for the healthcare sector in 2040.
This content, combining fiction and immersive storytelling, was screened during an evening event in Nantes (France) in front of numerous stakeholders and decision-makers in the healthcare field.
Discover this amazing project in this interview with the teaching team represented by Simon Lozac'h and Zaki Jawhari, as well as three international students. A beautiful illustration of design as a strategic tool for co-constructing a desirable and sustainable future that serves citizens!
"This may have been the first time I used AI to describe the future, particularly in the field of healthcare. It's a real challenge: for the team and for the progress of the work, because we're using technology to help us imagine what the future will be like. "

"We introduced students to a methodology for producing a film. They began using Google AI Studio and other large language models to produce a pitch, then a story, from which they began producing scenes, composed of different shots. Thanks to this methodology, combined with AI, we can very quickly, in one or two days, obtain two or three iterations on the same subject. From there, they began to produce videos from still images (...) They accomplished work that would have taken about a month and a half in a studio" explained Zaki Jawhari, professionnal designer and teacher at L'École design Nantes Atlantique.
"It was a design fiction exercise for our students, an exercise in storytelling, as well as in constructing a complete narrative, exploring themes, and learning about these themes, because these international students come from all over the world (...) In addition to all these challenges, they also had to produce images that were appropriate and not too disturbing, neither too dystopian nor too disconnected from these issues, while maintaining an innovative vision. Once again, we are very proud of them. The international designers we train at this school are truly indispensable for the future. Wherever human beings are at the center of a system or participate in a system, a designer has a role to play!" explained Simon Lozac'h, head of the Master's program.
"A fast workshop like this helps our students understand what it means to work in professional conditions. Most of the time our students don't realize how capable they are to produce incredible outputs and when you give them a pretty stressful situation, in five days, with a real partner, for a real event. They produced a real output and they actually discover kind of superpowers."
"The global designers that we train in this school are really needed for tomorrow. Wherever human beings are at the center of a system or participate in a system, a designer has a role to play! "
