Impacts 2022 – Mellie LA ROQUE, Alumni 2018

Working for an ethical and responsible sustainable economy

Mellie, co-president of the association Designers Éthiques since 2018, questions the responsibility of the designer and imagines new practices and methodologies for a more virtuous design. The association is based on action research on responsible and sustainable digital design.

"We have entered a pivotal phase" she says. "The pandemic was a wake-up call. This shutdown has forced a large number of designers to re-examine their practices."

From the problem of screen addiction, to the conditions of extraction of rare resources, to the emission of greenhouse gases from digital technology or programmed obsolescence, the association sheds light on the social, economic, political and environmental impacts of digital technology.

"From our viewpoint as designers, these systemic impacts should not be overlooked. Even if they sometimes upset the economic models in place, it is necessary to instill new practices in the design of our products."

These issues are at the heart of Ethics by design, a major event that contributes to updating practices and imagining responsible and sustainable services for tomorrow.

"As designers, we are responsible for the tools we create," says Mellie. Ethics and deontology are convictions that she also disseminates, on a daily basis, as a UX Researcher and Service designer at e.Voyageurs SNCF.
