Hang Loose
The sport of surfing offers a global experience: physical prowess, constant new challenges, but also life rules and a "surfer’s" state of mind. However, the world is changing and so are our uses: while urban sedentariness is increasing, coastal landscapes are changing.
In view of this fact, Ugo asked himself: how can I surf on a daily basis, indoors or outdoors, regardless of the circumstances? Hang Loose is a compact solution for indoor use or for stable outdoor terrains. Intended for beginners or advanced surfers, it provides them with regular practice and prevents certain injuries when they resume surfing.
This project was selected as part of Design L'Expo 2021 and was exhibited at La Cale 2 Créateurs from 4 December 2021 to 27 February 2022.
"It was born from a question: how to reconcile an indoor practice and an ancestral practice in the natural environment?"
" Hang Loose is a training device for surfing based on simulation and proprioception. It was born from a question: how to reconcile an indoor practice and an ancestral practice in the natural environment? This project is part of a major theme of the MDes Digital program. We project man-machine interactions and we qualify the experience of a product-service.
The sports environment is a demanding research field. Ugo has managed to find the right distance between the various fields of research: industry of the future, cobotics-assisted operator stations, gaming, leisure and e-sports industry. Exploring the simulation of the liquid element is an innovative dimension of the project. His approach allowed him to carry out several tests to evaluate the force feedback to balance the physical relationship with the digital artifact.
Hang Loose is also a response to what could become, in the future, a resilient society in the face of health and climate risks. To relive simple experiences in the middle of nature, there is nothing like a simulated world…" Arnaud Le Roi - Course Leader Master's degree Digital Design
